How to ‘exercise’ while travelling

Exercising while travelling should be fun and simple. Try to think of it more as physical activity, rather than ‘exercise’, and choose activities that you enjoy. Below are some examples of exercises that you can choose while you are travelling that are both good for your health and fun! Don’t think of exercise as solely going to the gym or going for a run, it can be any type of activity that gets your joints moving, muscles working, and heart beating a little faster than normal.

Hire Bikes

This is a great type of aerobic exercise that can be of any effort you choose. Depending on where you choose to ride, how long you choose to ride, and the effort you put into your ride will vary the intensity of your exercise. This makes it the perfect choice of exercise on the go for any persons age and level of fitness. It is usually quite cost effective depending on where you are in the world and it is a great way to explore the town or city you are visiting.

Walk

Rather than hiring a car or getting on public buses and trains to get from one destination to the next, The best way to see a place and not miss out on any action is to walk. Of course this depends on how far you are travelling but if it is fairly short distances that are manageable by foot than you may as well get some incidental exercise in and get a better experience of the town you are visiting 🙂 It’s good for the heart, soul and body.

Hike

This is one of the fun types of exercises that you can do in most places all over the world. It is the perfect way to keep fit and healthy and be able to explore the best parts of the places you visit. If you’re worried about the intensity of the hikes then choose hikes are that are graded lower and easier to manage. Make sure you get some comfortable and practical shoes and you’ll be ready to go!

Griffith Park

Swim

Although not all holiday destinations are going to offer this type of exercise it is a great choice when you are on a hot summer holiday. Pack some swimmers, ride some waves, and have a splash around in the water and you’ll be keeping fit and fresh all in one 🙂 How can you pass on some crystal clear water in the Caribbean anyway? It’s an easy choice of exercise.

Ski/Snowboard

This isn’t my particular forte but it is definitely one to add to this list. This is a great type of activity that gets your body moving and heart beating, not to mention you may have to climb some hills to get to the top (unless of course you take the big slopes and ride up on the chair lift)

Kayak

Kayaking is a great type of activity that is sure to give you a workout. It’s fun and a great way to keep fit, however it can be a little pricey depending on where yo go. Why not give it a try, it’s fun 🙂

Surf

Again, this isn’t my forte but it is by far one of the great types of exercise you can do while travelling. It most definately gets your heart beating and whole core system working. You don’t even have to be a pro to do this, just take a surfing lesson and see what all the fuss is about? You’ll realise you have done exercise the next day 🙂

Yoga

If you want to get your body moving, muscles stretched, and mind relaxed then this your best choice. It can be done simply on your own in the comfort of your hotel room or you could even pay to take a class. A lot of holiday destination these days offer a yoga class so you’ll be sure to find one somewhere 🙂

Body weight exercise

If you aren’t one to get involved in exercise activities and want to save money and time then this may be your perfect choice. These exercises can be done in the comfort of your own hotel room or out in a park. These exercises can be left to your discretion, but the most basic and suitable exercise to do on the go include: Push ups, sit ups/crunches, squats, lunges, pull ups (if you find a bar), jogging/sprints, etc. The exercises can be endless. Just a tip: You can even pack a Theraband with you and this will add to your choices of exercise to do on the go. It’s small and compact so it won’t take up too much room in your bag 🙂

These are just some examples of exercise that you can do while you are travelling. The idea is that you keep it simple and enjoy it. It doesn’t have to be hard or too much effort, as long as your body is moving, muscles are working, and heart is beating a little faster than normal AND you are enjoying it, then your exercise done.
